The event kicks off on Saturday, September 21, with the longest Ultramarathon swim in mainland Portugal, covering a challenging 20km distance. The race begins at Belém Docks, with the iconic Monument to the Discoveries as a backdrop, and traverses the municipalities of Lisbon and Oeiras, culminating at Praia dos Pescadores in Cascais. On the same day, a 10km water marathon, equally demanding, starts at Praia da Torre in Oeiras and finishes at the same location in Cascais, where spectators gather in a natural amphitheater to cheer on the approaching swimmers.
In addition to these main events, the Swim Grand Prix offers various races for children and introduces a new competition model featuring point-to-point crossings of 5 kilometers, 1.9 kilometers, and 1 kilometer. These races highlight some of the most stunning beaches along the coast between Lisbon and Cascais.
Jorge Paulo Pereira of 3 Iron Sports, the event organizer, expressed optimism about the event’s growing international reputation, stating, “This race has generated huge international demand, and we hope it continues to make a name for itself on the open water scene. Cascais, Oeiras, and Lisbon are destinations of excellence for sports tourism, and the nominations for international awards make us optimistic for the future.” The event is expected to attract around a thousand swimmers from 40 different nationalities.
3 Iron Sports, founded in 2011, is renowned for its broad impact across various sectors in Portugal, promoting the nation’s best in tourism, sports, education, environmental protection, and social solidarity. Recognized as “Best Organiser of the Year” by the Portuguese Triathlon Federation in 2017, the organization has held the “High Patronage of the President of the Republic” since 2018 for its IRONMAN events. In 2023, its Lisbon – Cascais Crossing was nominated for Event of the Year by WOWSA and recognized as an “Event of Public Interest” by the Portuguese Government.
