New Zealand’s Kirsten Cameron Triumphs in the Maratona del Golfo Capri-Napoli Open Event
In the third and final open event of the Maratona del Golfo Capri-Napoli, Kirsten Cameron from New Zealand outpaced everyone. Both male and female competitors. Cameron swam the 36 km (22 miles) from the island of Capri to Marina Grande Beach in Napoli in 7 hours, 51 minutes, and 15 seconds. Luciano Cotena’s Eventualmente Eventi & Comunicazione sets the primary event for Saturday, September 7.
Cameron did an outstanding job by beating Hampus Carlsson from Sweden, who finished in 8 hours, 35 minutes, and 5 seconds. This victory helped her secure the top spot.
Priscilla Magalhaes from Brazil also had a fantastic performance. She finished in 9 hours, 50 minutes, and 15 seconds, securing third place overall. Lorenzo Raggio from Argentina and Gabriela Lemus from Mexico followed with times of 10 hours, 20 minutes, and 10 hours, 30 minutes, and 43 seconds.
Cameron, born in 1973, is a freestyle and open water athlete, holding world masters records in several age groups. This was her first experience at Capri-Napli and her first time swimming such a long distance.
She said, “I had been preparing for the Capri-Naples for a while,” she said. “Last year I had to withdraw due to an unexpected bereavement. I am happy with my performance and the organization: it is a pleasure to swim in the Gulf of Naples. The sea conditions were not favorable, especially in the first ten kilometers and during the last two hours. I also had a minor shoulder problem, but it only affected my performance minimally.”
Event organizer Luciano Cotena said he was happy with the event.
He said, “The three open events have demonstrated not only the sporting value but also the touristic appeal of the Capri-Naples, with many enthusiasts coming from all over the world and various Italian cities to swim and visit the numerous beauties of the province and more generally of Campania. It is an important prelude to the main race on September 7.”
Hampus Carlsson has done the Capri-Naploli for three years. He said, “Once again, I did not find good seas. Despite this, I took eight minutes less than in 2023. It was a tough test, but overall, I am more than satisfied.”
In the relay category the “Swim Il Salento” team claimed first place, completing the crossing in 7 hours, 29 minutes, and 10 seconds. This team was composed of six swimmers: Giorgio Frigoli, Mauro Inacio, Vincenzo Mazzilli, Francesco Ricci, Marco Vantaggiato, and Fabio Antonio Zizzi.
The second-place team, “Nuotatori x caso,” finished with a time of 8 hours, 01 minute, and 30 seconds. The swimmers in this team were Rocco Maurizio, Michele Giampietro, Federico Gregorio, Francesco Menichini, and Riccardo Pettini.
In third place, the “Team P. Geijo” completed the swim in 8 hours, 07 minutes, and 20 seconds. This team consisted of Andrea Ugolini, Juan Cuadrelli, Noelia Rivas, Daniel Paz, Pablo Barbieri, and Bruno Vissani.
